Removal Procedure

Caution

Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in Cautions and Notices.






Important

To ensure that all sediment within the transaxle is suspended in the fluid, the fluid should only be drained after it has reached a normal operating temperature of 88°-93°C (190°-200°F). Normal operating temperature is reached after approximately 24 km (15 miles) of highway driving.

1. Position the vehicle on a hoist and raise the vehicle.




2. Drain the fluid with the vehicle level and the engine OFF. Allow at least 5 minutes for the fluid to drain completely.
3. Clean drain plug and lubricate with clean Saturn Transaxle Fluid. Wipe off excess fluid and install.

Notice

Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Important

Check for any damage to the rubber seal and replace the seal as necessary.

4. Install the drain plug and tighten the plug to specification.
Tighten

Tighten the transaxle drain plug to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).





5. Lower the vehicle and remove the air induction system and the air filter box.




6. Remove the filter using a nylon strap-type filter wrench.
7. Remove the magnet from the filter.
8. Wipe the magnet clean and install the magnet on the new filter.

Installation Procedure

1. Lube the new filter seal with the automatic transaxle fluid and install the filter. Follow the tightening instructions on the filter label.

Notice

Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

2. Install the air filter box, if removed.
Tighten

The air box attachment bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

3. Install the air induction system.

Important

Fill the transaxle slowly or use a vented funnel.

4. Refill the transaxle using Saturn Transaxle Fluid to the specified initial refill capacity.
5. Start the engine, warm up the transaxle, and check for leaks.
6. Bring the transaxle up to normal operating temperature and check for proper fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Checking Procedure .
