Rear Compartment Side Carpet Falls Down at Decklid Hinge Area on Driver's Side (Install Foam Block, Fastener, and Modify Side Carpet)

1997-- 2000 Saturn S-Series Sedans built after and including VIN VZ345133

Condition

Rear compartment side carpet falls down around decklid hinge area on driver's side of vehicle.

Cause

Rear compartment wiring harness and/or decklid lid release cable comes in contact with rear compartment side carpet when decklid is closed, causing top edge of side carpet to be pushed down.

Correction

Install foam block behind rear compartment side carpet with fastener and modify side carpet using procedure in this bulletin.

Procedure

  1. Open rear compartment decklid.
  2. Pull top of rear compartment side carpet down away from wiring harness on driver's side.
  3. Important

    Vehicles built after and including VIN YZ101702 have a section of carpet already removed and do not need to be modified as specified in step 3.

  4. Using razor blade or sharp knife, cut a 30 mm x 20 mm (1 1/4 x 3/4 in.) section out of top of rear compartment side carpet at wiring harness area.

  6. With side carpet still pulled down, remove wiring harness connector rosebud retainer from spaceframe.
  7. Remove adhesive backing from foam block (P/N 21110766).
  8. Position center of foam block approximately 50 mm (2 in.) below wiring harness connector rosebud retainer hole in spaceframe.

  10. Install rear compartment side carpet back to its original position.
  11. Measure down 30 -- 50 (1 1/2-2 in.) on rear compartment side carpet from previous hole location and mark new hole location to be drilled.
  12. Drill a 5.5 mm (7/32 in.) hole through rear compartment side carpet, foam block, and spaceframe support.
  13. Clean up debris and metal particles from drilling operation.
  14. Install fastener (P/N 21038146) in drilled hole.
  15. Close rear compartment decklid.
