Removal Procedure

Important

Before removing the spark plugs, ensure water and other debris in the spark plug wells are blown out.

1. Remove the spark plug wire connector position assurance (CPA) attachment nuts and CPA (DOHC/LL0 only).
2. Twist the boot to break any bonding. Gently pull the spark plug boots off of the spark plugs.

Important

Do not use a flexible extension socket to remove the spark plugs. Damage could occur to the spark plug insulator.

Important

Use only a spark plug socket that has a rubber insert to hold the spark plug in place. The spark plug porcelain may crack if a deep well socket without a rubber insert is used.

3. Remove the spark plugs.

Installation Procedure

Important

Make sure the gasket is on the spark plug.

1. Set gap on the spark plugs to 1.02 mm (0.04 in).

Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.

Important

Always coat the spark plug threads with anti-seize compound before installation.

2. Install the spark plugs.
Tighten

Tighten the spark plug-to-head to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

3. Inspect the spark plug wires. Replace any wire that is worn or chaffed.

Important

If the boot is torn or ripped, a new wire must be installed. Do not repair leads from which the terminals have been pulled off. Replace the wire.

Important

Install the spark plug wires on the correct spark plugs as indicated on each spark plug wire. ensure the routing of the wire on the engine is away from moving parts and exhaust.

4. Install the spark plug wires. Press the boots onto the spark plugs until a click is heard or felt.
5. Install the spark plug wire CPAs and attachment nuts (DOHC/LL0 only).
Tighten

Tighten the battery terminal bolts to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

6. Start the engine to verify no misfire exists.
