(This bulletin also applies to any Saturn vehicle with service CD player, P/N 22711669, installed)
Fixed Operations Manager and Technician
Some customers may comment on a popping or crackling noise or distorted sound coming from the speakers at low volume, which only occurs when a CD is being played. The noise is most noticeable when bass is predominant in the music being played. This condition only affects vehicles with the single-disc CD/radio unit (RPO U1C) illustrated below.

The low audio frequency (below 20 Hz) may be over-amplified, which may cause the speaker to sound distorted (overdriven).
The circuitry from the CD player to the internal radio amplifier has been modified to eliminate the popping/crackling noise and distorted sound condition. If vehicle is affected by this condition, install new single-disc CD/radio unit, P/N 21997420.
If a popping noise is also present when only
listening to FM or AM radio, then further diagnosis will be needed. Refer to diagnostic
procedures in the appropriate Saturn Service Manual or SI. This bulletin only covers
the issue of noise and sound distortion when a CD is being played.Important

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians,
NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these
technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to
provide information that could assist in the proper service of a
vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment,
tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and
safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the
bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have
that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether
your vehicle may benefit from the information. |
