Caution
The vehicle wheels must be blocked and the parking brake applied when checking
the idle speed.
Important
The Minimum Idle Speed for the SOHC (L24) and DOHC (LL0) is 0 RPM
(stall) to 700 RPM. The minimum idle speed adjustments are set at the factory
and MUST NOT be tampered with to alter minimum or maximum engine idle speed. Improper
adjustment of the idle speed screw can cause false powertrain control module (PCM)
codes, idle instability and automatic transaxle shift concerns, etc.
Important
On original equipment throttle bodies, a tamper resistant screw is used to regulate
minimum idle speed of the engine. Adjustment of this screw is not to be performed.
- Block the wheels and apply the parking brake.
- Connect the
SA9195E
,
or the scan tool unit. The idle air control (IAC) pintle must be seated in the throttle
body.

Important
A/C, cooling fans and electrical loads must be OFF when checking the idle speed.
- Insert the IAC air plug in the throttle body.
The SA9106E is used for SOHC (L24 and /DOHC (LL0).
- Using the scan tool unit, check the idle speed. If not within the specifications
- 0 RPM (stall) to 700 RPM:
- Inspect the throttle blade for binding. Clean the bore if necessary. Replace
the throttle body if the throttle blade continues to bind after cleaning.
- Inspect for vacuum leaks at the vacuum hoses and gasket surfaces. Correct
any vacuum leaks.
Important
The engine must be at normal operating temperature, upper radiator hose warm.
Spark adaptive cells must be at 0.
- Repair as necessary.
If the minimum idle speed is above 700 RPM after performing the required
repairs, replace the throttle body. Do not adjust minimum idle.

- Using the scan tool unit, check the voltage on the throttle position (TP) sensor.
Do not replace the TP sensor unless the setting is outside of the 0.35-0.7 volt
limit.
- Remove the IAC air plug.
- Start the engine and check for proper idle operation.
- Refer to the diagnostic charts for further checks at the front of the
section if the concern is not corrected.
