OnStar Remote Functions Operational Check .
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis
might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
Condition/Concern:
An owner complaint of no remote service capability may be received. This concern
could be accompanied by other concerns which may or may not be related. If the owner
has concerns with exterior lighting, the horn operation and/or the door lock features
of the vehicle separate from and OnStar concern, these concerns must be remedied using
normal SI diagnostics prior to any OnStar diagnosis being performed. Once these features
are all functioning as they should, OnStar can be contacted as per the procedure below.
- With the vehicle in an open area with a clear view of the sky, press the
blue OnStar button. Wait for the OnStar advisor to answer. Ask the advisor if they
have data and GPS readings on this vehicle. If you do not connect or
they donot have both of these items, this condition must be remedied prior to performing
the following test. Follow normal SI diagnostics.
- Connect the Tech 2 and enter vehicle information such as make, model,
year, and option content etc.
- Navigate to the body computer area of the vehicle electrical system.
Perform a function such as honking the horn, lock/unlock the doors or flash the exterior
lighting using the Tech 2 and BCM output controls. If this vehicle does not have
this capability for all three of these items, choose whichever one it can do with
the Tech 2 for the next step. Once you have successfully performed the function with
the Tech 2 proceed. All vehicles should be able to perform the door unlock command
using the Tech 2. All DTCs within the Body section of the vehicle, especially those
beginning with the letter U (communication DTC) must be addressed to make sure all
systems are operational before proceeding further.
- Navigate to the message monitor screen with ignition key in the off/locked
position and all doors closed and no inputs to any module being activated. Observe
all modules present for active/inactive state. All modules should return to inactive
state within a ten minute period. If this does not happen there may be a concern
that needs addressing prior to going further with this test.
- Using the sleep mode function, put all modules to sleep. Observe the
modules for a period of two minutes to make sure they remain inactive. If they donot,
diagnose the reason for the activity prior to proceeding.
- You will see a timer at the bottom of the screen when in this state.
This timer will stop once a module becomes active. When modules becomes active, the
first module to become active will be listed at the top of the message monitor list.
The modules will be listed in their subsequent active order.
- Contact OnStar Center on the dealer phone and/or a cell phone and request
the center perform remote functions on vehicle such as lock or unlock doors, flash
lights, honk the horn.
Note: You must have the owner's permission for OnStar to perform any of these
functions. This would include their PIN number to be given to the OnStar advisor
you are speaking with. Donot call the center unless you have this information readily
available along with the owner's full name and address for verification purposes.
- Observe the Tech 2 message monitor screen. At the time of the remote
function request from the OnStar Center to the vehicle you will notice a change of
state from inactive to active on this screen for various modules. This change of
state will occur within a ten minute time frame from the time of your call to the
OnStar center. If the OnStar module does go active, also look for the BCM (which
may have one of several names) to go active also. You may observe any number of modules
go active as a result of this request from the OnStar Center including the IPM, RIM,
IPC, RFA, etc. This is normal as this network is required to perform the requested
service.
- If this sequence does not occur as described, turn the ignition key to
the run position. Request the OnStar Center perform services again. If the requested
service can be performed with the ignition on there may be a concern with the cellular
system in your area. To check this, perform this same procedure on a known working
vehicle. If both vehicles can perform the requested service with the key in the run
position please report this to GM Technical Assistance - OnStar for diagnostic purposes.
- Report all your findings to GM Technical Assistance - OnStar should this
vehicle not perform as requested.
If the vehicle performs the requested service, the concern may be intermittent
and/or random in nature. Diagnosing such a concern may entail questioning the owner
as to location, the date of the incident and/or the battery condition etc. These
items will assist GM Technical Assistance - OnStar in diagnosing the concern.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Repair all lighting, horn or door lock concerns prior to performing this procedure.
If this procedure reveals a concern with the OnStar system and the BCM interaction,
GM TAC - OnStar should be contacted for further assistance.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the
condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps
do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact
GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for
the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other
vehicles with similar symptoms.

GM bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians,
NOT a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform these
technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to
provide information that could assist in the proper service of a
vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment,
tools, safety instructions, and know-how to do a job properly and
safely. If a condition is described, DO NOT assume that the
bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have
that condition. See your GM dealer for information on whether
your vehicle may benefit from the information.
