Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement

Caution

Safety precautions must be followed when handling a deployed inflator module (air bag). After deployment, the inflator module (air bag) surface may contain a small amount of sodium hydroxide, a by-product of the deployment reaction, that is irritating to the skin and eyes. Most of the powder on the inflator module (air bag) is harmless. as a precaution, wear gloves and safety glasses when handling a deployed inflator module (air bag), and wash your hands with mild soap and water afterwards.

Caution

When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

Important

In the event deployment has occurred, refer to Repairs and Inspections Required After a Collision .

Repositioning SIR Coil Assembly

Important

If the yellow tab is inadvertently removed during installation or removal and coil hub has been rotated, the SIR coil must be repositioned.

Important

If the coil assembly is not properly oriented to the steering column/gear assembly, the coil will be damaged.

  1. Gently rotate the coil hub CLOCKWISE with the tab (2) removed until slight tension is present.
  2. Gently rotate the coil hub COUNTERCLOCKWISE (count approximately five revolutions) until slight tension is present.
  3. Gently rotate the coil hub CLOCKWISE one half of the number of revolutions counted in step 2 (approximately 2.5 times).
  4. Rotate the smallest distance required to align the yellow tab (2).
  5. Install the yellow tab (2). Use tape if the tab is unavailable.

    Important

    LHD shown, RHD similar.

    Important

Always align the front wheels to the straight ahead position when removing or installing a coil assembly. If a coil is removed without the wheels in the straight-ahead position and the steering wheel has not been moved, the same coil assembly can be reinstalled if the coil hub has not been rotated.

  1. Position the vehicle with the front wheels pointed straight ahead and the steering wheel centered in the straight ahead position.
  2. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  3. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  4. Remove screws and upper steering column shroud.
  5. Rotate the key to the ACC position, depress the lock button and remove the ignition cylinder assembly.
  6. Remove the screws and the lower steering column cover.
  7. Remove the SIR coil assembly rosebud-type fastener from the bracket below the steering column.
  8. Disconnect the horn/cruise in-line connector under the steering column.
  9. Remove the screws from the SIR coil assembly.
  10. Unroute the SIR coil pigtail from behind the lever control switch (1). Remove the SIR coil assembly (2).
Installation Procedure

Important

A new SIR coil assembly is equipped with a yellow tab that is removed after the steering wheel is installed. This tab passes through the steering wheel at the pass through hole.

  1. Route the long pigtail of the SIR coil assembly and the horn/cruise in-line connector behind the lever combination switch and down the steering column.
  2. Install the SIR coil assembly to the lever combination switch.
  3. Install the lower steering column shroud. Install the ignition lock cylinder. Install the upper steering column shroud.
  4. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  5. Connect the horn/cruise in-line connector.
  6. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
