Throttle Linkage Inspection

The throttle system, including the accelerator and cruise, should operate freely without hesitation between full closed and wide open throttle. The throttle system component causing hesitation or sticking should be replaced. Inspect for the following:

1. Missing parts such as a retainer or clips
2. Interference of linkage or cable, conduit to critical components such as fuel lines, brake pipes, harness leads, etc.
3. Proximity of the cable to the exhaust system and other heat sources -- Check for melting and/or discoloration.
4. Cable kinking -- Maintain generous bend radii of the cables.
5. Clearance of throttle system moving parts throughout their travel relative to stationary components
6. Damage of components due to cable kinking, severe abrasion, mis-alignment frayed core wire, etc.

Important

Accelerator and cruise control cables should not be lubricated. If a binding condition exists with the cable itself, replace the cable assembly.

Replace missing or damaged components. Reroute any mis-routed components.

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the air intake tube and fresh air hose.
2. Remove the PCV hose.




3. Release the accelerator control cable from the throttle lever.
4. Release the cable retainer locking tangs from the accelerator control cable bracket.





Important

The accelerator cable assembly can be removed and installed easier with the accelerator pedal assembly removed. Refer to Accelerator Pedal Removal.

5. Release the accelerator control cable from the accelerator pedal assembly.





Important

An adjustable wrench can be set to the width of the hole and used to collapse the throttle cable retainer tangs.

6. Release the cable retainer locking tangs from the dash panel.
7. Remove the cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Caution

Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.

1. Raise the vehicle squarely on a hoist. Refer to the lift instructions for positioning the vehicle correctly on a hoist.
2. Route the cable through the front of the dash from the outside in, under the intake manifold, and up between the second and third intake ports.
3. Lower the vehicle.





Notice

Whenever a throttle cable assembly is installed, make sure the locking tangs are engaged to the front of dash and the seal is properly installed. The cable should be installed so that the tangs are in a horizontal position to provide optimum sealing. Pull on the cable to ensure the tangs are engaged.

4. Install the cable retainer into the front of the dash.




5. Install the cable retainer into the support bracket until the locking tangs engage.
6. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle lever.




7. Inspect the air cleaner gasket and replace if torn, deteriorated, or damaged.
8. Install the air cleaner assembly or air inlet tube and resonator.
9. Attach the air inlet and fresh air tubes.
10. Connect the accelerator control cable to the accelerator pedal assembly.
11. Check the accelerator control assembly for binding.
