AFTERMARKET CASSETTE- TYPE PORTABLE CD ADAPTERS #95-T-08B - (Jul 1, 1997)

SUBJECT: Information on Aftermarket Cassette-Type Portable CD Adapters

Due to a revision under Models Affected and the type of CD adapters that are recommended, this bulletin supercedes bulletin 95-T-08A, which should be discarded.

MODELS AFFECTED: 1995-1998 Saturns equipped with the following options:

AM/FM Stereo and Tape Player Radio - UM6

AM/FM Stereo and Tape Player Radio (w/Equalizer) - UU6, UP6

PURPOSE: The end load cassette mechanism, used in the 1995-1998 Saturn stereo systems listed above, has control software which is capable of sensing cut or broken tapes as well as binding tapes during play, fast forward, or fast reverse. If the sensing feature is triggered, the "cut tape routine" minimizes damage to the radio by first reversing the direction of play, and then by ejecting the cartridge.

Because of this feature, some cassette-type portable CD adapters will not work in the cassette tape players listed above. After about five seconds, the cassette-type portable CD adapter is ejected.

There are some cassette-type portable CD adapters available that will function properly in the cassette player. The cassette-type portable CD adapter must be constructed with a "gear" or "resistance wheel" to simulate normal tape drag. An example of a cassette-type portable CD adapter that may work in the above mentioned CD cassette players is the Sony CPA-9.
